Carl Fletcher Lamar, my father

Carl Fletcher Lamar was born in Hawesville, KY on October 7, 1914. He received his formal education in the public schools of Hawesville and graduated from Beechmont High School in 1933. He was valedictorian of his graduating class. He attended Western Kentucky State College in Bowling Green and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture in 1937. While at Western, he played basketball, baseball and football. In 1936-37, he was co-captain of the Western "Hill Toppers" basketball team that won the KIAC and SIAA Basketball Tournaments.

Carl did graduate work at the University of Kentucky, receiving his Master of Science Degree in Education in 1949 and Doctor of Philosophy Degree in 1957. He started teaching vocational agriculture and coaching basketball at Meade County High School in 1937. He continued teaching and coaching at Meade County High School until 1942 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II. He served three and one-half years with twenty-five months in the Pacific Theatre. He was placed on inactive duty December 7, 194 with the rank of Captain. In 1956, he was given a medical retirement status with a rank of Major.

After release from the U.S. Marines, Carl was employed by the Kentucky Department of Education to develop a course of study for veterans of World War II who were eligible for farmer training under the G.I. Bill of Rights and wanted to be rehabilitated in farming. He also taught the first class of veterans in Kentucky enrolled in the Institutional On-Farm Training Program. The class was taught at Berea College in Berea, KY in 1946. He returned to teahing highschool vocational agriculture at Jeffersontown High School in February in 1946 and the first of July, 1947, he was agian employed by the State Department of Education as Supervisor in Agricultural Education. He continued in this position until September 1, 194, when he was employed by the University of kentucky as a teacher in Agricultural Education.

Carl Fletcher Lamar joined the Hawesville Methodist Church in 1924 and was a member of the Brandenburg Methodist Church from 1937 until 1958 when he joined the Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. As a member of the Brandenburg Methodist church, he was Superindentendent of the Sunday School, steward of the official board and teaher of the adult men's class. He was also a charter member of the Brandenburg Rotary Club, member of the Harrison Masonic Lodge at Brandenburg, secretary--treasurer and president of Alpha Nu chapter of Phi Delta Kappa at the University of Kentuky, member of Gamma Sigma Delta at the University of Kentucky and member of many professional organizations. He was a Democrat in politics.
